Josh is one of our youngest volunteers. He started volunteering at the shop two years ago before he went to university. He enjoyed working in the shop so much that he has come back again this summer to help in his holidays.
Josh is studying Computer Science at the University of Hertfordshire and has just finished his first year. His ambition is to be a programmer as he loves solving problems.
Josh’s favourite product is Olive bread which he likes as it is difficult to find in other shops.
Josh enjoys volunteering because of the fantastic managers we have in the shop. He also loves talking to the customers and especially all our visitors from far and wide.
We need more volunteers in the shop. Would you like to come and help? We need shop assistants, but if you would like to help in the background we also need bakers to work for about an hour and a half making bread. We are a very friendly group and would welcome you with open arms. Please call into the shop and ask for Lyn, Lynda or Holly or phone on 01672 539200. See our volunteer profiles for details of why our volunteers love working in the shop.
As part of our environmental policy, we have decided to charge 5p for carrier bags at the community shop. All the money made from the sale of carrier bags will be paid to our designated charity.
We have also reduced the cost of our reusable bags to £1.70 so we are selling them at cost price. Why not pop in and buy an attractive fabric bag at a very low cost. They last for years – I have had mine since the shop opened and they are still going strong.
In October 2015, our shop was presented with the Village Retail Award at the Community First annual awards ceremony in Devizes. Here is a picture of Michele Lomas, our Chairman, being presented with the award by Community First’s Vice President, William Wyldbore-Smith.
The cup and certificate are on display in the shop.
Its hard to believe that Avebury Community Shop opened seven years ago – the years seem to have passed in a flash!
Back in 2007 the village had been hit by the closure of the local primary school, then the shop and the village post office shut early in 2008. A public meeting showed that there was great enthusiasm for a community shop, so a steering committee got together and arranged the necessary funding and permissions to launch the new Avebury Community Shop with a grand opening in March 2009.
Since then the shop has gone from strength to strength – if you haven’t visited us yet please do, and if you’re one of our regular customers and/or a volunteer then thank you for all your wonderful support – here’s to the next seven years!
